WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield-Marenisco school held its graduation ceremony on Friday evening, as 19 seniors were dressed in red and blue as they stepped up to receive their diplomas. The school's gymnasium was filled with family and friends.
"I thank you, family and friends, for being here tonight; you are the people that matter the most to the class of 2017," said superintendent Catherine Shamion. "The best is yet to come to these graduates," said Shamion. "They have so much to look forward to."
This year's valedictorian, Elizabeth Makela, graduated with a 3.8 GPA and plans to go to Michigan Tech in the fall. "I'd like to thank the family members who raised us to be who we are today," said Makela. "The rest of our lives is a long time and the rest of our lives starts now."
Graduates each took a moment to distribute a white rose and give hugs to their family members.
Speeches were delivered by head teacher Brandon Makela and 2003 graduate Ryan Holm, a star runner.
The class motto, "What feels like the end is often the beginning," resonated throughout the ceremony.
Graduates Scott LaRock and Isaiah Sturkol then played two lively musical selections from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and a selection from Zelda on the marimba.
The students then crossed the podium to accept their diplomas before moving their tassles to the left.
"You gave us the great pleasure of the opportunity to get to know you and be part of your lives," said Shamion.
