Officials investigate drowning at Sylvania Wilderness Area

WATERSMEET — An investigation into an apparent drowning Sunday evening on East Bear Lake in the Sylvania Wilderness Area of Watersmeet Township continues.

The search resumed Monday morning and the body of 24-year-old Sang-Mook Yoon, of Grand Rapids, was recovered from the water shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday.

Law enforcement was made known of the incident around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A group of campers was swimming near a canoe landing on the lake. All of the people got out of the water, except for Yoon.

Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department deputies and officers of the Lac Vieux Desert tribal police, along with Michigan State Police, responded and searched until dark.

According to a GCSD news release, the group was staying at a campsite on the lake.

U.S. Forest Service personnel also assisted the GCSD.
