Bessemer Fourth of July goes off without a hitch

BESSEMER — Linda Nelson said the Fourth of July events in Bessemer went off very well.

The weather did not result in any cancellations or delays, even though they had to move one event inside, planned as a contingency.

Nelson said the 50-50 sales were “incredible.” The sales opened Tuesday, June 27, and the tent stayed busy. The fireworks committee tried to keep at least two people in the tent for sales, but at times had as many as five to six people making 50-50 sales.

The events brought out a significant number of children, which Nelson compared to the first year they held a balloon toss. She said she had to beg people and only managed to get five to seven teams to sign up. This year’s balloon toss had at least 75 teams, said Nelson.

The Bessemer Fireworks Committee meets Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. to begin planning for next year, while everything from this year is still fresh in their minds.

Nelson said input is welcome at the committee meeting, so people should come if they have any fresh ideas.
