Ontonagon — The Ontonagon Area Board of Education lost a board member but gained a teacher at its monthly meeting. The board hired Heather Beck as the special education instructor at the school. Beck is a member of the school board and indicated she will resign her seat on the board because of the appointment. The board gave her a special kudos for her service on the board.
The board accepted with regret the resignation/retirement of long time teacher Jerry Blake. Blake has nearly 30 years as an elementary teacher with 23 of them at the Ontonagon Area School District. Blake’s retirement is effective August 31.
A Ewen-Trout Creek teacher was hired as part of the combined Ontonagon Ewen-Trout Creek football team. Brandon Ward was selected to guide the Junior Varsity Football team at Ontonagon. Ward, a teacher at E-TC, will coach the Junior Varsity football team for the 2017-18 school year. Ward was a coach at E-TC before they combined.
The Ontonagon Area High school’s highly successful Robotics team will spend a night in Duluth, Minnesota for a program. The cost is covered by the Robotics Fund which came from donations. The group plans to have a float in the Labor Day Parade.
In other action the board set athletic game prices for students K-12 at $3.00, Senior Citizens 60 and older $3.00 and other adults $5. With a five game pass, the individual games would be $4 for adults $2.00 for students and $2.00 for senior citizens.
—Approved the transportation contract with the Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency for transportation of Head Start students at $60 per month.
—Approved a lease agreement with the GOISD, for leasing one room for the Head Start students at $6,800 per year, the same as last year. –Adopted a resolution opposing elimination of Title IIA funding for professional development for teachers.
—And accepted bids from Twin City Dairy for dairy products and Bimbo Bakeries for bakery products for the 2027-2018 school year.
