ONTONAGON, Mich. - Russell Graham Cleary, 62, passed away Sept. 22, 2017.
He was a great father, brother, uncle, friend and boss. Born in Ontonagon on Feb. 5, 1955, to the late Richard G. and Kay Jane (Jamison) Cleary, he grew up in Ontonagon with his brothers and was an active member of the community there.
He graduated from the Ontonagon Area High School in 1973, leading his classmates through many endeavors such as drum major on the Ontonagon Mountaineers Drum and Bugle Corps, captain of the football team, Prom king and class president for many years.
After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1976 and was stationed in Korea for the duration of his time.
Russ was an independent man who started up many companies during his lifetime and built a legacy for his children in Great Lakes Environmental Service. He worked hard and played the game of life well, his generosity extended to so many people. Russ was diligent and dependable, taking every opportunity to improve his life and the lives of others.
He is survived by his four sons and two daughters: Robert, Jeremy, Josh, Ryan, Brittney and Leigh; their families; and his partner, Mary Zimmer.
In the words of Russ Cleary, "It is what it is."
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m., with Pastor Ted Trudgeon officiating. The Ontonagon County Veterans Association will be providing military rites.
The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
