SPOKANE, Wash. - Eino Raymond Matiska, 87, of Bessemer, Mich., passed away in Spokane on Oct. 10, 2017.
Eino was born Sept. 1, 1930, to Albin and Helmi Matiska, in Ironwood, Mich.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954, and worked as an electrician at White Pine Copper Mine for 35 years.
Never one to stay idle, Eino kept busy after retirement working at the cranberry marsh, tree nursery, and ski hill at various times. He moved to Spokane to be near family in 2014.
Eino enjoyed berry picking and jam making, and was also a skilled basket weaver. He was an avid Packers' fan, even after he moved to Washington state, where the Seahawk fans were not as enthusiastic about his preferred team.
Eino is survived by children, Jeff (Barbara) Matiska, Grass Valley, Calif., Mike (Joann) Matiska, Spokane, Rick Matiska, Great Falls, Mont., Patti Matiska, Laurel, Mont., and Jim Matiska, Bessemer; stepchildren Richard (Michelle) Vanderschaegen, Munising, Mich., Kristi Vanderschaegen, Portland, Maine .; brothers Robert (Bette Jo), Wickenburg, Ariz., and John (Chris), Ironwood; sisters, Shirley (Ed) Keranen, Jackson, Mich., and Nancy Zalores, Kalamazoo, Mich. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Eino was preceded in death by wife Marilyn, brothers, Jerry, Henry, Rudy, Rodney, Frederick and Roy; and sisters, Ellen Swanson, Virginia Bjork, Sonya Lacente, Ruth Osterholm, Marion Osterholm, Elaine Thomas and Marlene Lechman.
The funeral service will be held at noon on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home, 304 S. Sophie St., Bessemer. Pastor Bruce Estola will officiate. Eino's family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.
