Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Ironwood Township — Maybe it was the damp weather but the crowds flocked to St. John's Lutheran Church on Airport Road in Ironwood Township Saturday for the church's annual pie social.
Organizers said each of the tables in the small church's basement was filled at least twice, which lead to an estimate of at least 150 people stopping by the event.
“(It was) the best one we've had in years,” said one of the organizers, Marlene Saari Mieloszyk.
Those attending had a chance to sample slices from over 50 pies, as well as other baked good.
The pie social has been held for over 40 years and is one of several fundraisers the church holds.
“We do this, and then we do the Krupsua feed,” Saari Mieloszyk said. “We try to do a couple fundraisers a year.”
The money is used to help pay the general operating expenses of the church, the smallest of the four that make up the area's Christ Lutheran Parish.
“It helps pay our electric and our bills,” Saari Mieloszyk said. “We're a very small membership, we might have 20 members.”
