Bessemer — The Michigan State University Extension office in Bessemer is still gathering food for the “Eat Smart Knapsack” program.

According to Ashley Dennis, the program is designed to provide in-need students in Gogebic County with a bag of nutritious and easy-to-prepare food over the winter and spring break. The plan is to supplement their home-cooked meals with healthy food as if they were still in school, only without the homework.

Dennis said the Extension office is filling each bag with the same products, so it is important people provide the Extension with the requested items, as there will not be substitutes.

The individual schools within Gogebic County are providing the Extension with the names of the kids who will benefit from the bags. The bags will be handed out the week prior to Christmas and spring break.

The Eat Smart Knapsack program is in need of:

—Nature Valley granola bars.

—Peanut butter.

—Low sugar jam/jelly.

—Canned vegetables.

—Fruit cups (packed in 100 percent fruit juice.)

—Microwave popcorn.

—Microwaveable brown rice.

—Instant oatmeal packets.

—Canned tuna.

—Canned chicken.

—And canned beans.

The food can be dropped off at the MSU Extension office at 500 N. Moore St. in Bessemer. If anyone has additional questions about the program, call Megan Martell at 906-663-4045.
