IRONWOOD, Mich. - Sylvia E. Allison, 91, of Ironwood, and former longtime Wakefield Township resident, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, Nov. 7, 2017, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood.
The former Sylvia Wiemeri was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Ironwood, daughter of the late John and Anna Helmi (Philaja) Wiemeri, attended Bessemer schools and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1944.
She married Wesley C. Allison on July 13, 1946, in Alhambra, Calif. He preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 2009.
Sylvia and Wesley resided on Johnson Road in Wakefield Township for many years. She was employed as manager of the S&L Store in downtown Ironwood and, together with Wesley, owned and operated Erickson-Coleman Hardware on Suffolk Street for 16 years; retiring in 1991.
Sylvia was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield. She enjoyed music and dancing, knitting, sewing, gardening, yardwork and was an excellent cook and baker. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving are a son, Dennis (Connie), Apple Valley, Minn .; daughter, Cindy (Mike) Verbanac, Rosemount, Minn .; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Jean Wuorinen, of Ironwood.
Besides her parents and husband, Sylvia was predeceased by brothers John, Walter, Gust, Eino, Waino and Lauri Wiemeri; and sisters Lempi Karvonen, Esther Matila, Anna Sarlund, Jenny Howarth and Mayme Wiemeri in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Nancy Kauppi officiating.
Committal will take place at the funeral home, with luncheon to follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley.
Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
