GURNEY - On a Saturday morning as the crisp air returned to Northern Wisconsin, nine members of the 4-H comprised of youngsters from Gurney, Saxon, and Hurley brought pies and BBQ to the Gurney Community Center for a pie social. Beyond the food, Santa Claus arrived via firetruck instead of a sleigh to give each Saxon and Gurney kid their own present. Horsepower is capable of bringing Santa through when there is no fog.
The Gurney Golden Gopher 4-H club has been conducting the pie social for at least 12 years according to Jesse Bender. The counter and fridge were stocked with pies as the 4-H members placed slices on a table for visitors to make their selection with care. Bender said they usually get around 80-100 people coming through the community center for the pie social and of course kids to see Santa Claus.
Greg Massoglia has come as the merry man in red for the last four years, but Bender said he has been filling in for Santa for much longer - even back when she was in high school she can remember Massoglia getting dressed for the part.
