Richard Lewis 'Moon' Sain

RAMSAY, Mich. - Richard Lewis "Moon" Sain, 87, a long-time resident of Ramsay, passed away peacefully late Saturday evening, Nov. 25, 2017, at his residence, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Moon was born on Feb. 15, 1930, in Laurium, Mich., a son of Richard and Arla Martha (Morse) Sain. He grew up in Ewen and graduated from Ewen High School in 1949.

Following graduation, Moon moved to Detroit and worked for the Ford Motor Company until the Korean War broke out. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country for three years. Moon was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Sept. 11, 1953.

He decided to return to his hometown, and he was united in marriage to Anne Doreen Smith. They celebrated more than 62 years of marriage.

Moon worked for 32 years at White Pine Copper Company and served as United Steelworkers union vice-president for many years. After his retirement from White Pine, he was employed for 10 years at Superior Tree Service in Wakefield.

His special interests included coaching hockey and baseball and giving lessons on the cribbage board. Moon was a loyal fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers.

He was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wakefield.

Moon is survived by his beloved wife, Anne; five devoted children, Rick (Sherry), John (Marcia), Gail (Jim) Stratman, Jayne (Jack) Fiamoncini and Jim (Shannon); 12 cherished grandchildren; 16 loving great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale and Roger (Sandy); his brother-in-law, Donald (Karen) Smith, and many dear nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; an infant son, Timothy; a sister, Georgia Zelinski, and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Sain.

The family will greet relatives and friends Friday, Dec. 1, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 407 Ascherman St., in Wakefield, with the honor guard beginning at 10:15 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dominic Agyapong, celebrant.

Following the Mass, military rites will be accorded at the church under the auspices of the Wakefield American Legion Geroux Post 11 and Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084 Honor Guard, assisted by the U.P. Funeral Honors Team.

Luncheon will be served at the church hall following the military service.

Rite of Committal and interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Ewen.
