ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Eugene E. Sandin, 91, of Bessemer, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Mercy San Juan Hospital.
He was born on March 1, 1926, to the late Elmer and Dora (Matrella) in Bessemer. Eugene attended and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School and joined the U.S. Navy after graduation. Following his time in the service, he met Evelyn Ulasich, and the two exchanged marriage vows on Aug. 21, 1948, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood.
Eugene proudly served his country during World War II, spending all of his time on destroyer escorts in the South Pacific.
Following the war, Eugene and Evelyn worked in Chicago and later moved to California in 1951. He worked the majority of his career for Standard Oil of California. They retired to Onalaska, Wis., in 1988, and later to Sun City, Ariz., in 1997. They returned to Roseville in 2016.
Eugene loved watching San Francisco Giants baseball and San Francisco 49ers football on TV.
Eugene was an active member of the San Mateo Elks Club.
Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Sandin; sons, Gregory (Barbara) of Granite Bay, Calif .; and Bruce Sandin (Kim) of Roseville; grandsons, Christopher, of Sacramento, Calif .; and Ryan Sandin, of Roseville; and sisters, Loraine Abt, of Royal Oak, Mich., and Donna Lapmarado, of Warren, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dora Sandin; and sister, Virginia.
His ashes will be interred at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, Calif., with full military honors in early 2018.
