Bessemer - The Powerball drawing was estimated to have a winning purse around 440 million at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday. A crowd moved through Stempihars in Bessemer between 4:30 and 5 p.m., where about 30 tickets were sold. Between 5 and 5:20 p.m., only 3-4 customers bought Powerball tickets, although one customer did buy three scratch tickets. Cigarettes appeared to be the hot ticket for the after five crowd.
Deb Fergus, paying for fuel for the Gogebic RangeTrail Authority groomers on Wednesday evening said she "works too hard for her money to buy Lotto tickets." Before moving out and keeping the trails groomed for area snowmobile riders.
Lisa Selin, who professed to not be a normal gambler, said she, "only buys tickets when I hear about the high jackpot." When asked what she would do if she won, Selin said she would pay off her bills and move to Florida.
A general Google search of "lottery winner troubles" results in almost 12 million headlines showing the curse that rapidly follows the giant pay day for many of the winners. One gentleman, buying three tickets who refused to have his picture taken for the paper, but who works in the courthouse in Bessemer said, "no," when asked if he was prepared to handle the winnings.
The Mega Millions jackpot is being drawn Friday and is expected to yield roughly 418 million, putting both jackpots over 400 million this week.
