Fatal crash closes US 51

OMA, Wis. - A 45-year-old woman was dead at the scene of a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 51 near County CC in Oma Sunday morning.

A 32-year-old man involved in the crash was taken to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the Iron County Sheriff's Department, a car driven the 45-year-old woman crossed the center line on U.S. 51 at 2:56 a.m. Sunday and was hit by the 32-year-old man's vehicle.

The woman was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, according to a Wisconsin Department of Transportation news release. But alcohol may have been a factor, according to the release.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the crash.

The names of both individuals are not being released pending family notification.

The accident closed U.S. 51 for several hours Sunday morning, forcing drivers to use various detours.

The Iron County Sheriffs Department, Hurley Police Department, Hurley Fire Department, Oma Fire Department, Mercer Fire Department, Beacon Ambulance Services, Iron County Highway Department and Iron County Coroner's Office all responded to the crash.
