Iron, Bayfield jobless rates among highest in state

Iron and Bayfield counties continue to post the worst employment numbers in Wisconsin.

While the state’s unemployment rate for January was 3.1 percent, the rate for Iron County stood at 6 percent, followed by Bayfield County’s 5.6 percent.

That ranked the two last among Wisconsin’s 72 counties.

The worst job numbers for January were consistently throughout the northern counties.

The U.S, jobless rate was 4.1 percent for January, compared to 4.8 percent a year ago, according to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

Ashland County posted a 4.2 percent jobless rate for January, Vilas County was at 4.4 percent and Oneida County was also at 4.2 percent.

Price County posted a 3.6 percent unemployment rate.

The total labor force in the state was 3,157,600, compared to 3,158,300 in December, according to the DWD.

The total number of people who were unemployed improved by 4,200 from December to January and the employment rate was around 14,000 better than a year ago, according to the DWD.
