IRONWOOD, Mich. - Joseph J. Modjewski, 87, lifelong resident of Bessemer, died peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital. He was born April 14, 1930 in Bessemer, the son of the late Adam and Anna (Snarski) Modjewski.
Joseph attended St. Sebastian Catholic School and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School with the Class of 1948. Joe is a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. He worked at the White Pine Copper Mine until his retirement.
On June 6, 1953 he married Mary Ann Brydges and was her devoted husband for 64 years. Joseph was the beloved father of Roy (Pat) Modjewski, Michael (Lori) Modjewski, Mary Jo (Steve) Welch, and Ann Marie Brown. He was the proud grandfather of Ryan (Amanda) Brown, Emily (Gavin) Haasl, Craig (Meredith) Modjewski, Matthew (Erin) Modjewski and Mark Modjewski. He was a loving greatgrandfather to Riley, Nora and Hazel. Joseph is also survived by his brother, John (Laura) Modjewski, and sister-in-law, Barbara Sokolowski. He will be remembered with great affection by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Balzell, and in-laws: Roy (Rae) and Lyndall Brydges, Ruth and Orval Prudhomme, Shirley Brydges, Donald and Maureen Brydges, Nina (Jack Lyons) and Donald Kerstien, and Ray Sokolowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. Fr. Dominic Agyapong will be the celebrant. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 5-7 pm at the Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home in Bessemer and continue on Wednesday at 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer in the spring.
