INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sandra Jean Mattson, 78, of Ironwood, Mich., passed away at 12:21 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born on Friday, Feb. 17, 1939, in Reed City, Mich., to the late Ora Asa and Goldie Almeda (Richert) Borton. She married the love of her life, Reino Leonard Mattson, on June 30, 1956. They resided in Bergland, Mich. In 1970 they moved to Vincennes, for a period of five years, moved to Gordon, Ga., for 18 years and then retired to Ironwood, Mich.
Sandra was a homemaker, had worked as a restaurant cook in Bergland, and at Flossie's Ceramics in Vincennes. After retiring, she and her husband would winter in Arizona; and she would be the craft coordinator in the retirement community in which they stayed. Sandy had been member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1963, was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church, and was an accomplished artist in the mediums of oil, ceramics, wood and relief carvings.
She is survived by her children, Brenda Frederick (Terry), Cindy Rogers, both of Martinsville, and Reino Mattson Jr. (Emily), of Monrovia, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Sandra was also preceded in death by her husband, Reino Leonard Mattson Sr., who passed away on March 5, 2017; her parents, Ora and Goldie Borton; siblings, David Paul Borton, Shelby Allen Borton, Sharon Lee Salonen, Patricia Kay Tompkins, Suzie Borton and Shirley Borton.
There will be a graveside service for Sandra on June 5, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
