Ironwood students meet animals
IRONWOOD — Rather than a field trip to a farm, the farm came to Ironwood’s Luther L. Wright K-12 School Friday, as Gogebic County’s Michigan State University-Extension office and 4-H program brought a menagerie of farm animals for students to interact with.
The district’s elementary school students had a chance to feed, pet and brush the animals — including calves, sheep, chickens, rabbits and goats.
Along with giving students a chance to see types of animals 4-H participants raise, 4-H program coordinator Ashley Dennis said the students also learned about the importance of hygiene and how to avoid getting sick after interacting with the animals.
The lessons included the importance of thoroughly washing hands and not eating or drinking anything around the animals to avoid contamination.
