IRONWOOD - Ida Elaine Lindberg, 86, passed unexpectedly on Monday, June 18, 2018.
She was the middle daughter of Richard and Mary Niemi. Ida attended Roosevelt in north Ironwood and was looking forward to the upcoming Roosevelt School reunion scheduled for this summer. This event will miss her dearly. She went on to graduate from Luther L. Wright High School in 1949.
Glen J. Aho of Hurley married Ida in 1951. They moved away for a short period of time, but came back again to Ironwood and raised their sons, Jeffrey, Gregory and David. After 12 years together, Glen tragically passed away in an auto accident in 1963 leaving behind Ida and the three boys. Ida continued to live in the family home Glen built in Ironwood Township.
She worked at the Big Powderhorn Mountain ticket office the year they opened and later moved to the ski shop. Many may remember Ida's smiling face for many years at downtown Ironwood's "famous" Carlson's Supermarket checkout. She also worked at Ray Smeeth Sporting Goods as a floor salesperson. She earned her LPN degree from Gogebic Community College in the early 1980s and worked until she retired at the Villa Maria nursing home in Hurley, Wis.
She married Jim Lindberg in 1983, and they enjoyed 20 years of beautiful companionship and friendship. During that special time together they enjoyed traveling about with or without their trailer, but most of all they loved being grandparents.
She was a beloved mom, gramma and great-grandma, sister, auntie, cousin and a great friend to many. She was a true Finlander and would tell you what was on her mind without sugar coating.
She was most proud of her children, Jeff (65) and Greg (47) who both passed away at young age. She was heartbroken to have to outlive them. She continued to be a mom of Dave Aho; mother figure to her daughter-in-law, Ceci; five grandchildren, Heather Emmerich (Greg), Kathryn and Bethany Aho (Jeff), Casey and Kai Aho (Dave) and one great-grandchild, Julian Emmerich (Heather and Fred), playing a big role in everyone's life.
She enjoyed traveling, working on her garden, sewing doll clothes, taking day trips or enjoying a cup of coffee with friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Richard Niemi; her two husbands, Glen Aho and Jim Lindberg; her sons, Jeffrey and Gregory Aho; and her sisters, Nelmi Martinson and Susan Slade.
She is survived by her son, Dave (Ceci) Aho; brother, Ray (Olive) Niemi; sister, Florence (Gene) Thomas; grandchildren, Casey Aho, Kai Aho, Bethany Aho, Kathryn Aho and Heather (Fred) Emmerich; great-grandchild, Julian Emmerich; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5120 E. Margaret St., Ironwood Township, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Steve Hyvonen, officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Ironwood, is assisting the family.
