Hurley — St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley held their annual summer picnic on the church grounds Sunday.

The beautiful weather brought a large crowd to enjoy good food, music, children’s games, bingo and fellowship.

Picnic goers relaxed and visited with each other as they were musically entertained by Ray Haapala, former Ironwood resident, now of Hazelhurst, Wis. The church has been inviting Haapala to their picnic for the past four years.

A highlight of the day was Gerry Traczyk’s delicious fry bread. She’s known as “Queen of the Fry Bread” and has been serving up the tasty treat for 25 years. She said she learned to make it from the “best Italian women around.”

Lifelong parishioners Frank Romanowski and Rob Winn donated their time manning the grills.

Romanowski said they went through 30 pounds of Scottie Peacock’s “world famous” salamini very quickly. Peacock donated the salamini along with 30 pounds of porketta to grill. The picnic was such a huge success that they also ran out of corn and hotdogs.

The picnic concluded with a raffle drawing.
