Ironwood — While the Old Depot building escaped damage, Ironwood Chamber of Commerce Director Michael Meyer said it could have turned out a lot worse after someone started a small fire under the covered area in front of the Chamber of Commerce office Thursday night.
“It was such a dangerous thing to have occurred,” Meyer told the Daily Globe.
He said while the pavement was brick, it was under the painted wood ceiling and a spark could potentially have led to the historic building catching fire.
“All it would have taken is a breeze,” he said.
The remnants of the fire appear to resemble a small campfire in a photo Meyer provided to the Daily Globe.
He said he contacted the Ironwood Public Safety Department about the fire and some broken glass and rocks left in the area, and an officer was sent to investigate the scene.
City workers later came by and cleaned up the area, Meyer said.
Meyer asks anyone who may know something about who started the fire to contact the IPSD at 906-932-1234.
