Township board approves road measure for ballot

Ironwood Township — Ironwood Township voters will be asked to renew a millage used to fund road repairs in the next election, after the township board of trustees approved putting the measure on the November ballot Monday.

The measure — which was originally passed four years ago — seeks to continuing using one mill township voters pay, “solely for the purpose of maintaining township roads,” according to the resolution the board passed.

“No one’s taxes would go up, they would just stay the same,” Supervisor Steve Boyd said.

One mill translates to $1 for every $1,000 of taxable value.

According to the resolution, the levy is expected to generate $82,000 in the first year.

Much like the past measure, the proposed measure would be for four years — running through 2023.

In other action:

—The board reappointed Boyd and Trustee Kevin Lyons to the Powderhorn Area Utility District’s board. Treasurer Maria Graser and Trustee Bev Michaels were selected as alternates.

—The board approved revisions to the utility district’s articles of incorporation.

—Sandy Lahtinen was reappointed to the township’s planning commission.

—The board passed a resolution encouraging the state to keep the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Marenisco open.

—Boyd said he would be getting prices to pave a sidewalk near the township hall’s door.

—The board scheduled a budget workshop for 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 before the next board meeting.

—Boyd reminded the public the township will be hosting the inaugural U.P. Summerfest 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature vendors, food trucks, face painting and other activities; with funds raised from it going toward the township’s volunteer fire department.
