Rainfall sets Sept. 21 record

IRONWOOD - Sometimes weather forecasters hit the nail right on the head.

The National Weather Service predicted 1.7 inches of rain for Ironwood for Thursday and Friday morning and 1.73 inches fell for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m. Friday at the wastewater treatment plant on the Montreal River, off Cloverland Drive.

That set a 117-year record for Ironwood for Sept. 21.

The monthly rainfall total stands at 3.23 inches, compared to the long-average of 2.7 inches through Sept. 21. The highest total recorded for the month through Sept. 21 was 9.85 inches in 1926.

The forecast called for sunshine today, after Friday afternoon brought more wind, showers and cold north winds off Lake Superior, before late clearing.

Even with Friday's turn to the colder temperatures, the average reading for the month of 62.6 degrees is well above the long-term average of 57.6 degrees.

For the record, the greatest snowfall total in Ironwood on Sept. 21 was 2 inches measured in 1913.

The record low temperature was 35 in 1984, according to the NWS.
