Gogebic County budget sets salaries for next year

Bessemer — The 2018-19 budget adopted by the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday sets salaries for board members and county officials.

The chairman of the county board receives a base salary of $445 per month and the finance committee chair is paid $395 per month.

The other five commissioners receive $320 per month.

Commissioners are paid $35 for each separate standing committee meeting they attend.

An out-of-county meeting or conference qualifies a board member for a $45 payment.

County board members are not covered by the county’s medical insurance.

Other salaries include:

—Prosecuting attorney: $75,811.

—Sheriff: $60,087.

—Prosecuting attorney assistant: $56,500.

—Undersheriff: $56,040.

—Clerk-register of deeds: $52,504.

—Administrator: $51,544.

—Treasurer: $48,700.

—Equalization director: $48,500.

—Magistrate-administrative clerk: $45,000.

—Probation-drug court officer: $38,500.

—Magistrate: $36,462.

—Emergency management coordinator: $23,544.

—Drain commissioner: $2,000.

Jail cooks are paid $12 an hour.

The sheriff’s department off-road vehicle officer and marine-snowmobile officer are paid based on union scale.

District, circuit and probate court positions are paid based on state standardization rates.

The budget approved by the county board sets the following staffing levels, based on full-time equivalents:

—Sheriff’s department: 23.

—Probate-district court: 6.

—Clerk-register of deeds: 4.35.

—Prosecuting attorney: 3.

—Treasurer: 2.

—Building-grounds: 2.

—Circuit court: 2.

—Administrator: 1.

—Equalization: 1.

The county fiscal year runs through Oct. 1, although there have been discussions about returning it to Jan. 1.
