Pie social draws crowd to township church

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - The parking area next to St. John's Lutheran Church was full and cars lined a section of Airport Road in Ironwood Township Saturday as the church held its annual pie social fundraiser.

"We've had a good steady rush most of the day, lots of different community members coming out and supporting us," said Cortney Ofstad, the president of the church council.

The church has held pie social fundraisers for the last 35 years and the Ofstads have been involved since the beginning.

"We've done this pie social for many, many years. It actually started with my great grandmother, so it's kind of a cool tradition for our family and other families in the church to continue this pie social."

This year's fundraiser, which raises money for the church's general operating costs, featured at least 15 types of pie.

Whole pies and other baked goods were also for sale.

"We don't ever have a set amount of pies or set type, but it just kind of organically gives us a variety. So it works out well," Ofstad said, thanking everyone who contributed their time making baked goods as well as those who came out to buy the pies and support the church.
