Ironwood - As he was bagging groceries at one of the cash registers at Ironwood Super One, Lt. Don Horn said he has big goals for the annual Harvest Food Drive put on by the Michigan State Patrol's Wakefield post.
"We want to raise over 30,000 pounds of food," he said.
The annual drive is a statewide effort by State Patrol posts, and the post's drive has been one of the most successful. "Our area has led the state the last five years," Horn said. Last year's drive yielded 24,000 pounds of food for food shelves.
Residents can go to Super One and buy a specially marked bag with $10 of groceries for $5, and part of the proceeds go to the food drive. In addition, customers can purchase food and leave it for the food drive themselves.
Food collected will be distributed Oct. 29 to three food shelves - St. Vincent de Paul in Bessemer and Iron Mountain and Watersmeet Food Pantry.
Super One manager Lawrence Glatczak applauded the effort of the State Patrol. "It's great, it's fun," he said. Glatczak said this food drive was just a part of the store's efforts to get food out to those in need throughout the year in the immediate area.
