MARENISCO, Mich. – John R. "Pete" MacLeod, 72, formerly of Marenisco, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Nov. 15, 2018.
Pete was born on Nov. 12, 1946, in Wakefield, a son of John A. and Helen M. (Lundgren) MacLeod. He attended Roosevelt High School in Marenisco and graduated in 1964. Pete was an outstanding athlete, who excelled in baseball and basketball.
Pete continued his education at Gogebic Community College until he was drafted. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Pete was honorably discharged as a specialist 4th grade on Feb. 10, 1969. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge. In reflection in a conversation he was once told by his dad, hold fast and remember I'll always be in your back pocket.
Since Pete was an avid outdoorsman, he absolutely loved downhill skiing and water skiing.
Pete was a faithful member of the Marenisco Presbyterian Church and had a strong singing voice.
Pete is survived by his five siblings, Jacqueline (Tom) Charles, Marenisco, Patti Reichardt, Marinette, Wis., Tim (Jeannine) MacLeod, Marenisco, Mark (Jill) MacLeod, Bessemer, and Kim (Bob) Adams, Plover, Wis .; an aunt, Betty Hudec, Redding, Calif .; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and long-time family friends, Bob Anderson and John Zorich, both of Marenisco.
He was predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Barbara Godleski and Jane Roland.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at the Lakeside Memorial Chapel, 806 Putnam St., in Wakefield, with the honor guard beginning at noon.
Full military rites will take place at the funeral home under the auspices of Marenisco American Legion Post 523, Wakefield American Legion Geroux Post 11 and Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9084 Honor Guard, assisted by the U.P. Funeral Honors Team.
A memorial service will follow the military honors at 12:30 p.m., with the Rev. Roy Speck officiating.
A committal service and interment will take place at Marenisco Cemetery.
