Hurley - A small crowd gathered in the parking lot of Hurley City Hall Wednesday for the city's inaugural tree lighting.

Hurley Mayor Paul Mullard lit the tree next to city hall, and then the Hurley High School's Silver Express choir performed several carols for the gathered crowd.

"For the first time, I think we had a wonderful turnout," said Rita Franzoi, the Hurley Chamber of Commerce's marketing director and events coordinator. "And having Silver Express just puts the icing on the cookie."

Prior to the tree lighting, the chamber - which sponsored the event - organized several crafts for kids to do inside city hall.

Franzoi estimated roughly 16 kids attended, as well as a number of adults.

In addition to spreading holiday cheer, Franzoi said the tree lighting was also a good way to help others in the community as people were encouraged to bring items that will be donated to the city's nursing homes.

Silver Express will also perform at the Hurley School's Spirit Tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
