Lindy O. Allen

BESSEMER, Mich. - E8 AOCS Lindy O. Allen, U.S. Navy (Retired), 94, formerly of Bessemer and Wakefield, passed away Saturday evening, Dec. 29, 2018.

Lindy was born on Dec. 26, 1924, in Anvil, a son of Ivar Alexander and Rose Marie (Mattson) Allen. He attended A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer and graduated in 1943.

Lindy lived a fast-paced and exciting life. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 19, 1943, and proudly served his country during World War II. Lindy was honorably discharged on Jan. 1, 1946. Lindy re-entered the military on July 19, 1947, and continued his service for more than 19 years. He was honorably discharged for the second time on Nov. 15, 1966.

Lindy studied at the Empire State College in New York and earned a bachelor's degree.

He concluded his working career with the U.S. government, first as a senior inspector with the U.S. Customs Service for 18 years and then as a port director of customs for three-and-a-half years, retiring in 1988.

Lindy moved back to Bessemer in 1990 and lived there for 23 years. He resided in Wakefield for a period of time before relocating to Hurley, Wis.

Lindy took great pleasure going to social events and really enjoyed dancing.

He was a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a life member of Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673.

Lindy is survived by five children, Linda Pettitt, Rex Allen, Karen D'Ingillo, Matthew Allen and Justin Allen; several grandchildren; a dear friend, Elaine Hoff; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives, Dorothy, on Dec. 4, 1978, and Susan, on May 17, 2015; a daughter, Andrea; two brothers, Clyde and Douglas; and two sisters, Sigrid Anderson and Annette Maki.

A memorial service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in the spring.

Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer, with military rites.
