Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
MERCER, Wis. — For the second time in roughly a week, the Iron County Sheriff’s Department received reports of a vehicle going through the ice in southern Iron County.
The department’s dispatch center received a report of a vehicle that went through the ice on Trude Lake in the town of Mercer at 8:57 p.m. Thursday, ICSD Lt. Matt Foryan said in a release.
The two people in the vehicle were able to get out and walked to a nearby business for help, Foryan said, and no injuries were reported.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which responded to the scene along with the ICSD, is coordinating the submerged vehicle’s removal from the lake with its owner and a local company.
Earlier this month, the ICSD responded to a report of a truck submerged in roughly 8 feet of water on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Mercer at 3:59 p.m. Friday.
Two people were rescued from the roof of the vehicle after they drove onto the Flowage from Murray’s Landing to go ice fishing.
“Use caution when traveling on lakes and rivers, ice strength can vary within the same body of water,” Foryan said.
