Charlotte Alice Sunie

HURLEY, Wis. - Charlotte Alice Sunie, 92, of Carey Township, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on Feb. 2, 2019, at Sky View Nursing Center in Hurley.

Charlotte was born on June 17, 1926, in Saxon, to George and Mabel (Loomis) Steele. In her youth, she attended school in Saxon and later, in 1974, she obtained her G.E.D.

On Aug. 12, 1944, she was united in marriage to John F. Sunie by the Rev. C.L. Harries at First Presbyterian Church, and they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage before he passed away on Sept. 3, 2004. Raising her family was always her most important work. She also worked for many years as a nurse's aide at Sky View Nursing Center and medical records designee at Villa Maria Health and Rehab Center in Hurley, retiring in 1988. She also served several terms as the treasurer and clerk for the town of Carey.

She was an active, long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Hurley. She also served with the First Presbyterian Women's Association, as well as one term as a deacon and several terms as an elder on the church Session.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and spending time traveling to see her children and grandchildren. From a young age, she also enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. She had a natural, nurturing spirit, caring for family and friends throughout her life, finding great joy when she could brighten someone's day.

She will be sadly missed by six daughters, Catherine (Robert) Brewster of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeanette (Charles) Splonskowski of Hurley, Linda (Eugene) Korpi of Eau Claire, Carol (Guy) Colasacco of Pleasant Prairie, Diane (Harlan) Yanke of Waunakee, and Debra Karvonen of Superior; daughter-in-law, Rosa Sunie of El Paso, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; brothers, Everett Steele of Winter Park, Fla., and Roy (Doris) Steele of Greenville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mabel; her husband, John; infant son, Frederick and son, Donald J. Sunie; two sisters, Ellen Weber and Dorothy Herrick; and son-in-law, James Karvonen.
