Ironwood — The Gogebic Community College board of Trustees welcomed incoming college president George McNulty and his wife, Christie to the its meeting on Tuesday evening.
“Doctor McNulty is going to be our new college president beginning July 1,” John Lupino chair of the board said during a brief speech given before the meeting.
The future president asked a few questions during the meeting, but mainly just listened as Owen Ryskey described his experience while on a service learning trip to Guatemala.
“They don’t have as much as we do so they don’t take things for granted,” he said.
He spoke about the need to conserve water during the construction of a house and how nothing goes to waste.
“We toss things away, they just save it so use it later,” he said.
After hearing institutional reports from the automotive program, cosmetology and the foundation and a few other matters, McNulty reviled his outline to move forward.
“We’re going to look at some relationships, both between internal and external constituents,” he said.
McNulty emphasized the need to acquire information about the college so he can better assess the Institution’s condition.
“A lot of that information is going to come from people who may not be in senior leadership positions, McNulty said.
After the meeting he told the Globe he is looking forward to being here and transitioning my family.
“It’s a wonderful place — great college — and from what I’ve experienced so far, great people,” he said.
He said his priority is to “get to know” people, the area, bushiness and schools to build relationships within the community.
“We are very appreciative about the opportunity,” McNulty said, “and overall, we want to give our best to college and the community.”
In other business the board approved hiring:
—Aaron Froelich as the new Manager of Campus Suites.
—Joe Urbaniak tp replace retiring Keith Beckman as the Network and Technical Specialist.
—Leah Benson as the new Bookstore Manager.
