US Forest Service eyes road repairs

WATERSMEET - A washed out culvert has caused the U.S. Forest Service to close Forest Road 3340 at the intersection of Old U.S. 2 and intersection FR 3346 in Watersmeet.

According to a press release issued by the Ottawa National Forest, the road has been barricaded and visitors to the forest are reminded to adhere to any road closures for safety reasons.

The Forest Service anticipants the road will be closed until mid-to-late May, but stated visitors can gain access to FR 3346 from FR 4100.

Several culverts washed out due to significant rainfall and "minor" flooding. Forest users are encouraged to report significant road damage discovered to any local Forest Service office.

The Forest Service reminds visitors to use caution, as well as follow speed limits and weight restrictions while traveling on forest roads.

"We appreciate your reports of damaged roads and your patience as we work to repair and maintain our road system," a spokesperson said.

Along with the closure in Watersmeet, the Forest Service closed Forest Road 2270 in Kenton.

The closure, due to a "substantial wash out" of the road, impacts access to the Silver Mountain Recreation Site.

Access to Road 2270 will be closed south of the Sturgeon River bridge, according to the spokesperson, with access to the Bear's Den overlook from the south.

On the north side of Road 2270, access is closed at the intersection with Forest Road 2274 to allow access to Silver Mountain.

The Silver Mountain Recreation Site can be accessed from the north via Forest Road 2274.
