THE ART park in downtown Ironwood is decorated with white and blue flags Friday to mark May as Foster Care Awareness Month. Approximately 13,500 children are in foster care at any given time in the state of Michigan, according to Mandy Harris with Great Lakes Recovery Center. Foster care is critical for keeping children safe until they can be reunited with their families or adopted by a loving family, Harris said. She encouraged anyone interested in becoming a foster parent to contact 855-MICHKIDS to be connected with a Foster Care Navigator that can answer questions and help a person find an agency.
