HURLEY — The 14th annual Brian Nasi Memorial Heart run/walk and Wellness Expo takes place Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at the Hurley K-12 School.
The expo runs from 8 to 11 a.m. while the race starts at 9 a.m. Registered participants can pick up their Race Day Packets as early as 8 a.m. in the school commons
Ricky Kelly, event organizer, said people will still be able to sign up on race day.
“Usually we hit around 150 runners,” she said. “We’re not sure what to expect this year, but we’re about at our usual pre-registration numbers,” said Kelly.
Participants can choose to walk or run in either the 5k, or 1 mile race.
Multiple awards for different divisions will be presented after the race and Kelly said there are many activities plus “lots of great free raffle prizes for the kids.”
“It’s going to be a fun day,” she said
Commonly known as “The Nasi,” the race began in 2006 when Ginger Nasi, Brian’s widow, wanted to memorialize her husband who died of a heart attack at the age of 54. According to organizers, the event was a “call to arms” to promote healthy habits.
For the second year, The Wellness Expo utilizes a collaboration of organizations which focus on “family fun” and “healthy choices.” Some activities at the expo include: “Make & Take” Mothers Day gifts, Blender Bike smoothies and creating a healthy trail mix.
“There is nothing for sale, everything is free,” Kelly said.
Proceeds from previous events have been used to fund a walking track, defibrillators for Hurley school and equipment to area hospitals for heart-related activities.
