Ontonagon students help with Fritz Zimmer trail work

ONTONAGON - Ontonagon Area Schools seventh grade students under the direction of Tim Nelson and Tim Routheaux got to work re-chipping the Fritz Zimmer Recreation Trail on Friday.

The trail entrance west of the school near the village tennis courts needed attention as the exceptionally wet spring left a couple of mud holes. Students in the high school agriculture class will be doing more trail work during the last week of school.

The tools used for the project were purchased with grant money from the Portage Health Foundation. Chips were donated by the village of Ontonagon and local businesses.

There are additional trail entrances located off Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Michigan streets.

The western most part of the path system serves as an ATV connector trail from the intersection of Michigan and Seventh streets to the intersection of Parker Avenue and Seventh Street. The wet spring has also left many parts of the ATV connector trail covered with water.
