Bessemer - The auditorium in Bessemer's City Hall filled up fast for Bessemer's Woman's Club Flag Day social on Friday.

Barbara Karpus, club secretary and organizer of the social, said the event originated years ago as a way to differentiate themselves from other fundraisers.

"A lady who is now deceased, Vivian Paynter and I thought 'Why not have a coffee social on Flag Day,'" she said. "It's a day you can remember, and it went over well."

Karpus said the 27-year tradition of the social brings the women in the club together.

Club members kept the desert line stocked as people shuffled along selecting festivity decorated goodies before taking a seat at tables adorned with red, white, and blue napkins.

"All the ladies bake," she said. "Everything is home-baked, nothing is purchased."

Karpus anticipates more than 100 people will participate in the event,

"But with the weather today I don't know," she said. "They might come out if theres nothing else to do."
