Dorothy I. (Frostman) Kangas

OULU, Wis. - Dorothy I. (Frostman) Kangas, age 102, of Oulu, passed away, Sunday, June 23, 2019 at her home. She was born May 5, 1917 in Washburn, the daughter of Hans Hjalmar and Amelia (Boriin) Frostman.

Dorothy graduated from Washburn High School in 1936 and later received her teachers license from Ashland County Normal. She went back to school and completed her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Superior State College in 1963. Dorothy retired in 1976 after 32 years of teaching elementary school in Iron River, Brule and surrounding communities. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Sorority and the Chequamegon Area Retired Educators.

Dorothy married Oiva Mathias Kangas on August 22, 1943 in Duluth, Minn. The couple resided in Oulu where they raised three sons. Following retirement Dorothy and Oiva enjoyed wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Dorothy was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Iron River. She was the former Sunday School Superintendent of Hope Lutheran. She served as the Chairman of the March of Dimes Northern District. Dorothy enjoyed reading, dancing, playing the piano and flower gardening. She loved listening to her sons and grandchildren sing throughout the years at churches, dances, and numerous other community events.

Dorothy had an amazing recall and memory throughout her life. She was always a wonderful source of knowledge and history for family, friends and former students.

Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Ramon Kangas, Daniel (Bobbie) Kangas and Bill (Carol) Kangas; 4 grandchildren, Nathan (Katy) Kangas, Ryan, Adam and Aaron Kangas; step-grandchildren, Donna Jensen, Jenny (Nathan) Smart and Michelle Prenderville; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Tucker, Jacob, McKenzee, Allyson, Sofia, Nathan and Hailey; great-great-grandson, Matthew; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2003; granddaughter, Angela in 1990; and sisters, Amy, Violet and Alice; brothers, Francis, Fred, Ray, Vernon, Lloyd, Ken and Ted.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at the Community Center in Iron River, with Pastor Carol Braun officiating. Interment will be held in the Pine Glade Cemetery in Oulu at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Iron River Community Center. The reception will follow the services at the center
