WAKEFIELD - A table full of pie slices in various flavors tantalized visitors at a Thursday afternoon social by the Wakefield-Bessemer Rotary Club.
The colorful array at Wakefield's VFW Post 9084 included the flavors of apple, strawberry-rhubarb, lemon meringue, coconut cream, key lime, custard and various berry flavors.
"We do it more as a social event than a fundraiser," said Rotary Club president Jeanne Graham, who was manning the entry table with Julie Hautala, who organized the event.
According to the ladies, each Rotary Club member contributed two pies for the social, with profits going for community projects such as scholarships for students in both Bessemer and Wakefield.
Patrons of the event had no complaints, no matter what flavor they chose. Pastor Bill Jacobson, of the Sharon Lutheran Church in Bessemer and the All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, chose strawberry-rhubarb. "It was excellent," he assured.
