Public to hear Hurley highway interchange project plans

HURLEY — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting to discuss plans to improve the U.S. 2/U.S. 51 intersection in Hurley, including the possibility of installing a roundabout.

The meeting is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Iron County Courthouse.

“The objective of this meeting is to familiarize the public with the purpose and need for the project and to obtain input on the proposed improvements,” a WisDOT spokesperson said when announcing the meeting.

There are several possible designs being considered for when construction starts, according to the spokesperson, which is currently scheduled for the summer of 2021.

These include reconstruction of the existing bridge and overpass design, reconfiguring the intersection so it uses stop signs, and turning it into a roundabout.

Those interested in attending the meeting who may require special accommodations can contact Jim Volkmann at 715-365-5773 no later than three days prior to the meeting.
