Ironwood Township — The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees approved additional work on the township gym Monday.

The board approved spending $11,493 on a pair of projects in the township hall’s gym that will piggy-back on the ongoing repairs to the building.

“I don’t think we’re going to have more of a golden opportunity than this, to do some renovations to the gym,” Supervisor Jim Simmons said, referring to the work still being done to repair the gym roof after it was damaged due to last winter’s snow load. “I think this is an opportunity for us to try to … make this place a little bit more palatable for the rest of the township.”

The $11,493 the board approved includes $7,800 for painting and other touch-ups to the gym interior and $3,693 for the installation of a speaker system in the gym to allow it to host larger meetings and other functions.

Earlier this month, the board hired Ruotsala Construction — the company repairing the gym roof — to install a cap on the building’s chimney for $1,950 to prevent it from deteriorating further. The board also authorized hiring Ruotsala to build a small roof above the gym’s eastern exit for $2,500 and any costs for repairing the steps.

Ruotsala will also be the contractor painting the gym, according to information presented to the board.

In other action, the board:

—Accepted the Gogebic Range Water Authority’s hydrant flushing schedule as a communication. According to the schedule the township’s system is expected to be flushed Nov. 18-22.
