Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Mercer - Hot soup on a cold day is just what the library ordered Friday in Mercer at the second annual "Soup for You" soup tasting and recipe sharing event.
It was a full house and a good turnout similar to last year's event, said library director Teresa Schmidt.
There were 12 different soups to try, and many of them creative and out of the ordinary, such as the mulligatawny soup.
Victor with the blog "Craving Tasty" shared a bit of history on the soup. Of course many may remember the episodes of Seinfeld and the "soup nazi," especially the one where Jerry has to choose between his girlfriend and a bowl of soup because the very temperamental cook, actor Larry Thomas who played Yev Kassem, will not serve her. But the soup is that good.
During the main episode, Kramer states that mulligatawny soup is an Indian soup, but Victor states it's actually an English soup made after an Indian recipe that was not really a soup but a sauce derived from a word meaning "pepper water" and it was served over white rice.
Besides the mulligatawny, there was Hungarian mushroom, garlicky kale, squash and farro soup, pillsbury biscuit chicken dumpling soup, stuffed green pepper, wonder soup (meatless) and Ukranian borscht, which is a deep red beet based soup just to name a few.
"It's a wonderful community outreach," said guest Terry Kumpher of Mercer. Schmidt stated that it was a nice opportunity to have lunch with the community.
All the recipes will be shared soon on the library's website at mercerpubliclibrary.org.
