SILVER CITY — The recent snow storm dumped 12 inches of new snow on the Porcupine Mountain Ski Hill and mountain manager Bill Perrin said that has helped the skiing with all runs open and covered.
Perrin added it will be a busy few months with some major events slated in the next couple of months. One of the newer events will be the guided Snow Shoe Hike on Jan. 11, 18, 25, and Feb. 1, 15 and 22. Hikers will take a free chairlift ride to the top of the hill and then snowshoe down. Perrin said the hike is about 2 miles. “Some of it is through a beautiful wooded area. It’s a really nice experience,” Perrin said.
Snowburst at the hill is slated for Feb. 22 and the planning committee intends to add more activities for families as well as individual skiers.
All the popular events, including races will be back and much more,” he noted.
The 30th Annual Midwest Telefest will be three days, Feb. 7-9, and brings skiers from all over the Midwest, according to Perrin.
The Department of Natural Resources governs the Lantern Lit snowshoe activity which runs on Saturdays.
That popular activity takes snowshoe hikers around a 1-mile trail with a rest stop and a mug of hot cider.
The first lantern lit snowshoe walk this year was on Christmas Eve and another on New Years Eve.
The Lantern Lit snowshoe walks are each Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. through January and February and have proved to be one of the most popular activities of the winter season.
The ski hill is open Monday through Friday during the holiday week but after Monday, Jan. 5 the days are each Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Perrin said Pure Michigan photographers were at the hill and took great pictures of the activities and it is now on youtube.
He said it includes some of the history of the Porcupine Mountain, its skiing activity and some of the most beautiful scenery in the mountains.
