ERWIN TOWNSHIP - Kids in Gogebic and Iron counties had a chance to try out cross-country skiing as the Sisu Endurance Team kicked off its third season of skiing Sunday with a try-it-out day at ABR Trails in Erwin Township.

"A lot of kids showed up, a lot of parents were in here asking questions and interested. I thought it went awesome," Iron County 4-H Youth Development Educator Neil Klemme said.

The roughly 22 kids who participated Sunday had the opportunity to try out cross-country skiing on the trail system, regardless of whether it was the first time they were on skis or if they were skilled skiers.

After skiing on the trails, the kids got to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.

Klemme said some parents even took advantage of the event to get out on the trails.

Going forward, the team will meet Sundays between Jan. 19 and March 1 at ABR. All skill levels are welcome to participate in the seven-week program. The program is open to kids in grades K-12 in Gogebic and Iron counties.

For those who missed Sunday's event, Klemme said it isn't too late to sign up for the team.
