Ontonagon — A Greenland Township man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a 23-year-old Ontonagon man this weekend.

Cole Wascher, 24, was arraigned Monday in 98th District Court in Ontonagon on charges of assault with intent to murder and possessing a firearm while committing a felony. The assault charge carries a sentence of up to life in prison, while the firearm charge is a two-year felony.

Negaunee Regional Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 8:35 a.m. Sunday regarding a man being shot, a Michigan State Police spokesperson said, leading to a response from the Ontonagon Sheriff’s Department and troopers from the MSP’s Wakefield Post.

The victim alleged Wascher threatened him with a firearm and shot him when he tried to defend himself, according to a MSP news release

The victim was transported to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital before being transferred to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Wascher was located by law enforcement and taken into custody. He is lodged in the Ontonagon County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond.

The investigation into the shooting continues, according to the spokesperson.

Wascher’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24.
