BELLEVILLE, Mich. - Betty Marie (Liljegren) Goxem, 97, joined her Lord on April 1, 2020.
Betty was born to Paul and Elsie (Hoeft) Liljegren on Nov. 6, 1922, in Bessemer. Her family lived in the Ironton Location. She attended the Puritan School and A.D. Johnston High School. During her younger days she enjoyed ice skating, skiing and visiting the family's cottage in Mercer, Wisconsin.
After graduating in 1940, Betty's family moved from Bessemer to Detroit, where she met Rolf Goxem, a design engineer at the GM Tech Center. They married in 1954 and spent 45 wonderful years together. They lived in Detroit until the mid-1960s when they moved to West Bloomfield. For many years, Betty worked for and ultimately retired from the Children's Aid Society in Detroit.
Betty and Rolf enjoyed traveling, including several trips to Norway, playing golf, singing in their church choir, regularly attending performances of the Detroit Symphony, and going out to eat. Betty was the "family photographer" and always had her camera with her, taking pictures wherever she went. She enjoyed bowling well into her 90s. Faith, family, friends, and staying active were always important to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolf, on Dec. 11, 1999; her parents; her sisters and their husbands, Jane and Henry Lampe and Shirley and Leonard Hellman; as well as a niece, Ruthann (Hellman) McGill; and a nephew, Glenn Lampe. She was also predeceased by her in-laws, Robert and Marjorie Goxem.
Betty was a devoted aunt, great-aunt, and great-great-aunt to the many nieces and nephews who survive her. Auntie Betty will be missed!
Betty was laid to rest at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park, in Livonia. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Penrickton Center for Blind Children in her name.
