Ontonagon County voters to see millages on August ballot

Ontonagon — Several ballot measures are on the ballot in Ontonagon County in the August election.

Countywide, the Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency is asking the public to renew a .3 mill renewal for the operation of GOCAA’s programs for four years. Programs inlcude nutrition, meals on wheels, in-home care, snow shoveling, lawn mowing, help preparing taxes, Medicare/Medicaid counseling, medical escort and others.

SONCO Ambulance is asking the public at the primary election for 1.25 mills. The sum is an increase of .25 mills and a renewal of 1 mill. This will cover a period of four years. It is the first millage increase requested since the ambulance service was organized.

The Ontonagon Transit will be on the ballot. Known as On Tran, it provides provides transportation to the people of Ontonagon County. It is asking for a renewal of 1 mill for the service.

The separate tax limitation proposal would distribute 7.8 mills to various groups in the county. It includes a renewal of 6.54 mills for the county; 1 mill for townships, and .32 mills for the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District. It is the same millage that has been allocated for several years.

Individual townships in the county have millage proposal on the ballot as well. Bergland Township is asking for a 1 mill renewal for cemetery, fire department and general operation; while Haight Township is asking for .615 mills for new fire protection services.
