Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY, Wis. - George G. Reed, 77, died peacefully on June 9, 2020. He was a lifelong resident of Hurley and spent most of his career as Iron County clerk. He was an amazing storyteller and had a great sense of humor. No one loved the Green Bay Packers as much as he did, except maybe his wife. He will be greatly missed by his family.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1942, to the late George J. Reed and Frieda (Endrizzi) Reed. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from J. E. Murphy High School in 1961. Shortly after he served in the U. S. Army as an automotive maintenance mechanic and was part of the 32nd Division, Wisconsin National Guard.
George was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner of St. Mary's of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Hurley. He often served as a lector during Mass.
On Sept. 17, 1966, he married Lila Conklin. They were together for 53 years and had four daughters, Donna, Deb, Diana and Denise, who were affectionately known as The Four Ds. Cindy (Sturkol) Abbott joined the family in 1980. He lost his beloved daughter, Donna, on Aug. 8, 1984.
He was the proud grandpa to Haley and Zoie Swetkovich, Zane and Beck Brinnington, Donna, Marshall and Everett Lotzer, and Nathan Golombiski. He often kept them laughing with his stories from his own youth.
Besides his daughter, he was preceded in death by his parents,' sisters, Mary Carol Doman and Betty Ann Skibba; and brothers Pat and Bobby Reed. Two older siblings, Donald and Charlotte, preceded him in death in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, Deb Brinnington, Diana Swetkovich and Denise Lotzer; a special daughter, Cindy Abbott; and a brother, Jim Reed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley at 11 a.m., with Fr. Frank Kordek OFM as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley.
The family has chosen McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home of Ironwood to honor George's legacy of life. You can leave a condolence or a tribute at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
