Hurley - Two Hurley residents were displaced due to an early Friday morning fire on the corner of Hematite Street and 6th Avenue South.
The Hurley Fire Department responded at around 2 a.m. to a report of a residential fire at 510 Hematite Street, according to HFD Chief Mike Sejbl. By the time firefighters arrived there were flames coming out of the upper level of the home.
There were no injuries to the two adult residents or the firefighters, he said. The Red Cross is in contact with the residents and he believes they have another place to stay.
Law enforcement officers reported smoke coming from the eaves at around 2:04 a.m., and by the time firefighters arrived at the scene minutes later the flames were coming out of the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sejbl said. It is believed to have started in the northeast corner of the second floor in the home.
Most of the fire damage is on the second floor and the metal roof is badly damaged. There is extensive water damage throughout the home.
The fire department had both the ladder and fire engine along with nearly the entire volunteer firefighting crew on scene.
"This went about as best as any structure fire can go," Sejbl said. "When it's that far along the most important thing is to make sure everyone is safe and that no one gets hurt and that the fire doesn't spread."
The fire was under control within a few hours, he said. It took longer than usual because the metal roof complicated fire suppression efforts.
