Wakefield - Students in need of new hats, gloves and scarves were welcome to pick them up throughout Saturday at the Wakefield-Marenisco K-12 School.
As part of a project called "The Giving Fence," the free items were protected within clear plastic bags that were attached with colorful clothespins on a fence next to the school's playground.
"The idea for "The Giving Fence" came from someone from Appleton (Wisconsin) who sent a donation of gloves," said Kathy Makela, a fourth -grade teacher at the school.
Makela added that Superintendent Jason Gustafson recommended the idea as "a good service project" for the National Honor Society.
Hence, the students used monetary donations, as well as funds from a recent pizza fundraiser, to help supply materials for the display, which also included homemade items that had been received in the previous year.
According to Makela, honor students were responsible for setting up the display, after which members of the community stopped by to choose any item to their liking.
